What is matcha?
Matcha is a bright green tea powder from Japan, and it seems to be taking the world by storm, with growers struggling to keep up with demand. Like tea, it is made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis, but for matcha the bushes are grown under mats, and the shade help increase the plant’s natural production of chlorophyl. The resulting powdered leaves have a distinctive bright green colour and an earthy, umami taste. Matcha is also said to be packed with nutrients and antioxidants with plentiful claims made about its health-boosting properties.
Matcha blends
Matcha is great for blending with other things (maybe that’s why it’s called ‘match-a’?!). It teams well with milk and milk substitutes like oat, coconut, almond or soya milk, as well as combining perfectly with sweet flavours like honey, vanilla, cinnamon, fruit, and of course lavender!
